I think this might be better worded as: "Nobody understands money." I'm not saying I do. But I do recognize that it's a tool for exchange. -It's not a thing.
I'm going to go out on a limb here, and hypothesize that the 'conservative' approach to currency, (at least those that think it is a resource, or that we should tie it to gold, so it is more of a 'thing'), might go hand in hand with a worldview less tolerant of abstraction. Good and evil exists, etc... Keynes might not always apply, but he did describe money in a way that dealt with its inherently abstract nature. If you go into a bank, you aren't going to find much of their 'money'. And if you go to the people they loaned it to, you aren't going to find much of it either.
