Bringing up questions is exactly the right response to this kind of music, I think. We are all jazz-educated musicians, but we have a need to explore and evolve in our music. We don't believe jazz is something that happened in the 50's-60's, but more of an idea of making music that is bold, innovative, and features improvisation.

So to answer your question more directly, we all started by being inspired by the old jazz greats. We are currently more inspired by sound of individual genres like electronic music, john cage, etc. but we try to incorporate it in what we know and like. So some of the music you heard is composed and some is improvised - not just in the traditional sense of improvised solos, but in the sense where the whole band improvises. This can sound like whatever we feel like in the moment. It can evolve into something like ambient noise, or it can evolve into a trippy groove jam / house jam. Etc. The important thing is to have fun while we're at it. Sometimes when we play a concert we'll say "Hey, let's just jam for a bit and then play the next song on our setlist".

We (me and the drummer) were definitely decided this is something we want to do before the band formed. We found a keyboard player, and when we jammed together in this setting for the first time, we knew it was going to work great.
