One could argue that the mobile phone was not a new tech but an iteration of an existing tech. There were already phones and people already had a set of expectations of phones which mobiles did not meet. Being heavy and not holding charge for long were not desirable properties. The email example I gave, also fits into your category of more complicated new tech replacing incumbent popular tech. Email had plenty of shortcomings, it was not intuitive or easy to use initially.
