I first heard about FOMO from a band I used to follow, and it was a perfect description of how I felt following them. Literally following. Over about ten years I saw them live something like 117 (or was it 119?) times. I used to say if you saw them ten times, eight shows would be pretty good (but not great), one show would be kinda bad (bad audience, band off) but one night everything would come together to make something memorable. Fear of missing those memorable shows in part pushed me to go to more shows. But am I controlled by FOMO online? I don't think so. I've been off Facebook for twice as long as I was ever on it. I check sites like Twitter, Instagram and Hubski regularly, but it's out of interest in the content. It's also because everything at work takes 20 seconds to load, so it gives me something to do while waiting for my computer to catch up. I spent 24 hours offline in August. It wasn't a big deal, and I jumped online only to get an update from my cat sitter.
