Cough bullshit cough cough. The private prison industry is evil and big, but it makes nowhere near what the recording industry would have been making in the pre-Napster era. There is absolutely no way they were calling the shots with much richer companies. Not to mention that much of early rap was far more explicitly pro-crime than modern rap is. Modern hip-hop is often criticized for being too much "grind on hot chick in the club" and too little "real stories about urban crime."
