We lived in Detroit for almost two years, and heard them quite often then. But we were in the 14th floor of an apartment building, so there wasn't much chance of seeing anything. However, when I first heard them, I used to take note, but after a while I didn't really pay much attention.
Still, I can't imagine raising a kid in a nieghborhood like that. Kids shouldn't have to get used to gunfire. Or even the thought that people in their neighborhood kill each other. I can't think of a major US city that doesn't have a district where gang violence is a problem.
