One of the outcomes of this was for the US to discontinue all manned overflights, eliminating the intended primary role of the CIA's new plane, the A-12. Lockheed's response was to build the D-21 drone. The D-21 ran a few missions launched from B-52s, but the M-21 supersonic mothership was scrapped after a fatal accident. Cold War aviation is fascinating.
