Once again, they aren't dumb questions - they're insightful questions. The problem is the answers aren't simple, nor are they uncontroversial. You are talking about "shareholder value", which is probably the big argument in business management. How controversial? Well, It's generally blamed on Jack Welch, the former CEO of GE, who has said it is "the world's dumbest idea".

Really, it comes from Milton Friedman, who is either worshipped or reviled depending on whether you buy your suit at Brooks Brothers or Canali.
