It's to keep the focus on content and the conversation, and away from timeliness. I agree that it's something you sometimes want to know, but IMO when it's part of the primary display, it creates a sense of urgency and sometimes competition when it comes to news. I prefer a good story over a timely one, and this is an effort to reduce the 'first post' motivation.
