Historians are great when they are descriptive and sourced. But when they become theorists they are treading in waters to deep for them. The historical sciences just can not be experimental sciences, paleontology included.

Documents can suggest, imply etc but they can not prove causality.

The problem of course is in the nature of time not in the brains of the historians.
