Four of us were on a road trip out West from Michigan. When we got to the badlands, we were getting a bit tired of spending so much time with each other. As a result, we decided to wander about on our own a bit, and meet back at the car.

I walked around, and ended up on a high outcropping. Just as I was about to leave, I noticed a small dark object at the end of a narrow piece of cliff that jutted out. FYI, the badlands aren’t stone formations. They are more like very dense dried crumbly mud.

I carefully walked out on the narrow outcropping to get a better look. When I was about 30 feet away, I had to get onto my hands and knees. The cliff was about 2-3 feet wide, and sloped down quickly on either side. If I fell, I was dead, so I took it slow. As I got closer, I could plainly see the object was a wallet. I kept crawling, and got within about 10 feet of it. However, the problem was, the wallet was sitting at the end of the outcropping, and these last 10 feet sloped down at an angle, maybe 15-20 degrees or so. It then flattened for a couple of feet at the end where the wallet was.

It really seemed like some sort of diabolical trap. I was all alone, and this wallet was just outside of my reach. I sat for a solid minute and thought about it. I then took a deep breath and sitting on my butt with my legs ahead of me, I began to scoot down to the wallet.

Almost instantly, I started to slide. I squeezed the dirt to my sides and slid down onto the wallet. I stopped there, but I was freaked out. Another foot of sliding, and I was done. I grabbed the wallet and climbed back up, which was much easier.

This is the crazy part: I met my friends, and told them my tale as we walked back to the car. I was going to turn the wallet in (it belonged to a young guy from Wisconsin), and was debating whether or not I should buy myself dinner with some of his $80. I was poor, and was rationalizing that dinner might be a reasonable finder’s fee.

Anyway, just as we go to the car, I noticed that the car in front of us was from Wisconsin, and a few guys were packing it up. One was the owner of the wallet. I gave it to him, he thanked me, and we left. I have no idea how he dropped it there.
