I found this post interesting because one of my teachers is trying just what he recommended: letting the students use whatever tools necessary to solve problems on exams (in his words, "open book, open laptop: if you don't understand the material it won't help anyway"). Haven't yet had an exam with him, so I've yet to see it in action, though.
