Explaining the decision, Mrs May said: "The country is coming together but Westminster is not."
There will be a vote in the House of Commons on Wednesday to approve the election plan - the Labour opposition party it will vote in favour.
The prime minister needs two thirds of MPs to vote in favour to hold a vote before the next scheduled election date of 2020.
It'll be interesting to see how it plays out as the Labour Party appear a bit week under Corbyn's leadership. I doubt anyone else would be able to oust the Conservatives outright, especially considering how far ahead in the polls they are (though we all know how wrong they can be). Maybe there's potential for a coalition.
