I suspect that the spike in ocean plastics in the Pacific have less to do with run-off and currents, and more to do with Asian countries taking our plastics for recycling, but dumping them directly into the ocean instead. I wonder what the economics around the industry of buying garbage from the US were, and if it was in the shipper's interest to do this.

I also expect that some agency has satellite evidence of this.
