I was just thinking about this a few minutes ago. A lot of us have migrated over from reddit a short while ago, some have been here since the get go and some stumbled here from other sites like HN. With this type of exposure to other sites, ie. Reddit, I've noticed a number of tags here on Hubski that have similar names as those I've read on reddit.
I enjoy the familiarity thats come with some of the naming conventions that seemed to have popped up here. Some, like me, are cross pollinators. So, its easy to remember our favorite subs or tags. But, I figure some aren't familiar with reddit at all, never really went there, or just cruised on by and didn't stay for the ride. Some come from other sites like HN, get linked here from a blog, what have you. I'm curious to know what others think of naming conventions that are clearly meant to bring similarity to those they are used to. I think the userbase here is open to creating and posting with tags that just make sense to them in particular, but also to the more general population at Hubski.
But, just yesterday, I began posting using #historyporn. This was a blatant attempt to appeal to past and present redditors and I didn't even think about that until this afternoon. I noticed on a couple of my posts that they were also tagged with #photohistory, if I recall correctly. I liked it. I liked how other users can generate their own tags for posts in such a way. I see syncretic here and recall his running the SFWporn subs which I'm subscribed to. I also know and see many other familiar names who I've come across on reddit in the subs I follow. So, I guess what I'm trying to ask is does it even matter if we still incorporate tags in a way that resembles some of the subreddits, or any other websites, we went or still go to?
