It's becoming so prevalent. The fact that it looks so ridiculous yet still spreads like wildfire is ridiculous. Best non-academic explanation I've read so far:

It's a psychological defense mechanism whereby girls can voluntarily distort their faces for photographs so that if they later look at the photos and think they, as individuals, look "ugly" or not as beautiful as they imagine themselves to be, they can chalk it up the "duck face" they used.

All ugliness, even if they may be obese or have a terrible nose, is then all attributed to that silly duck face. By being silly with these poses, they refuse to take any subsequent photos seriously as representative of how fucking hideous they may actually be, lips distorted or not.
