A group which exemplified the term "badass mofo," The Doolittle Raiders were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal yesterday. Here's to the four surviving guys who strapped a bunch of twin-engine bombers to an aircraft carrier, steamed towards Japan, and took off to bomb Tokyo without enough gas to get back to an airfield.
This is one of the first stories I remember reading related to WW2 and it sparked my interest in the war. They undertook this mission having no idea if they would succeed, they weren't even entirely sure that the first planes would be able to take off from the aircraft carrier. But their success, limited as it was provided a huge morale boost that was sorely needed post-Pear Harbor.
