Yeah. This was in the university studios and I had access to the full drum mic set; I was recording some bits for an album of my coursemate's. Unfortunately this isn't just something that is just always set up and easy to pop down too, otherwise I'd get some drums on those tracks more often!

My advice for the best minimal drum mic set up is two overheads and one condenser. The overheads are placed as you would expect, and the condenser is extended into space between the snare, rack toms, floor tom, and kick. Perhaps with a bit more of a bias towards the snare. For this you might also have to remove one of the rack toms. You can get a reasonably nice, balanced sound from this configuration.

I'm in again next week though for another session, so I'll see about staying in a getting some bits recorded.
