- EVERY DAY I will post a theme throughout December and it's my hope that we can all participate. Do not feel intimidated if you're not a pro or if you simply have a phone to take pictures with. I'm in the same boat. Past participants (Let me know if you'd like to be removed or added):
Nice set up. I wish all my drums were mic'd. I use an overhead condenser about 5 feet away, six feet up and in front of the kit to pick up all the sounds. Once in a while I'll get really fancy and throw a 58 in the kick drum. It is less than ideal. Please, start throwing more drums on some of the #hubskicollaborativemusicclub stuff. We've got B_C's baseline that could use some drums.
Yeah. This was in the university studios and I had access to the full drum mic set; I was recording some bits for an album of my coursemate's. Unfortunately this isn't just something that is just always set up and easy to pop down too, otherwise I'd get some drums on those tracks more often! My advice for the best minimal drum mic set up is two overheads and one condenser. The overheads are placed as you would expect, and the condenser is extended into space between the snare, rack toms, floor tom, and kick. Perhaps with a bit more of a bias towards the snare. For this you might also have to remove one of the rack toms. You can get a reasonably nice, balanced sound from this configuration. I'm in again next week though for another session, so I'll see about staying in a getting some bits recorded.

Ah, gotcha. I moved to Portland a few months ago, but am working in rural Oregon through July. I'll be moving back in afterwards.
I'm kind of using this challenge as an excuse to sift through old photographs backed up in my camera folder rather than to take new ones. I don't know if that's in the right spirit or not, but here's one of my favorite kinds of quiet:
