I've got to disagree about the name. Diaspora means the scattering of people away from a homeland. Maybe they want to take people from the homeland of Facebook, but scatter them about?
People want to share photos and what they are doing, and now they expect video conferencing as well. Most of the people I know on FB would go blank on Learn about how to host your own Diaspora server. That's a tall order. Diaspora has a noble objective, but if they want to achieve it, it has to be stupid easy, and they just have to kill it on so many levels. Basically, they'd have to do for social networking what Dropbox did for file-hosting. I also find their fund-raising efforts odd. The first kickstarter made some sense. I forgot if I signed up for a Diaspora account or not. I think I did back in the beginning. But I want less social network in my life, not more. Who knows, maybe it will be awesome.
