I've got no answer for you. I just stopped by there for the first time. I like the idea that I would maintain "ownership" of the content I contributed. But I'm a little "social networked" out. G+ is working well for me and I'm nearly weened off of FB.

Is it me or does the graphic on this page look like a bunch of sperm?

-great name.

I've got to disagree about the name. Diaspora means the scattering of people away from a homeland. Maybe they want to take people from the homeland of Facebook, but scatter them about?

People want to share photos and what they are doing, and now they expect video conferencing as well. Most of the people I know on FB would go blank on Learn about how to host your own Diaspora server. That's a tall order. Diaspora has a noble objective, but if they want to achieve it, it has to be stupid easy, and they just have to kill it on so many levels. Basically, they'd have to do for social networking what Dropbox did for file-hosting.

I also find their fund-raising efforts odd. The first kickstarter made some sense.

I forgot if I signed up for a Diaspora account or not. I think I did back in the beginning. But I want less social network in my life, not more. Who knows, maybe it will be awesome.

"Diaspora means the scattering of people away from a homeland". -I know, that's what I liked about it. People consider social networks as there "homes". Perhaps Diaspora sees themselves as a catalyst to disperse people away from the thought of a social network as a "home". The word invokes a "migration" without a formal destination, which to me seems fitting.

Is that their logo or just their attempt at a cool banner? You're right though, it does look like a sperm cloud.
