It was 1994 -- next-wave hipsterism was just beginning. Condescension was coming back. Besides, the people saying it were envious: somehow the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith were putting out new albums and getting wealthy all over again. Meanwhile the new music... wasn't all that new.
