Don't know a lot about HFT, to be honest. Do you mean the specific mechanism of the crash? Or the abstract concept of computer traders acting without human involvement?
Yes - the specific mechanism of the crash was "a bunch of computers operating on non-vetted rules competing for fractions of a penny millions of times per second WHAT COULD GO WRONG?" It wasn't exactly unprecedented, either. Before there was HFT, there was "program trading" which probably caused Black Monday.
