Pseudonym combined with some form of persistent accountability I think are key for even better engagement. Add a minor useless reward system (daddy's internet points) and some form of self-policiing you have a majority of quality web communities today.

Just came to mind: It would be interesting to take the given name route.
You join the community, and choose your own pseudonym. However, after a certain amount of engagement, the community gives you a name. Of course, it would be insanely problematic, but interesting. You are now known as: comma_abuse.
