As someone who never watches anime, can I just jump in and watch this? I've seen Spirited Away and, when looked at it as a Eastern fairytale, found it an interesting story albeit something I'm not used to. Should I know anything beforehand? Is it something I might like and why?

You absolutely can. Spirited Away is very much an Asian fairy tale. Nausicaa, on the other hand, is a post-apocalyptic Samurai epic.

That sounds amazing. I'm in the middle of finals but I'll try to make some room for this movie.

I would say yes, you can just jump in and watch it. It's one of anime's greatest movies. The story and setting are interesting enough that you don't really need to dig the style to be able to appreciate it. Miyazaki's works have always been somewhat distinct in style and typically escape or transcend the standard anime tropes, so there's also that.
