Goodbye, fishes.

The early sea travellers to the new world were amazed at how much fish there were. They said there were so many cod it would be possible to walk across the Atlantic on the backs of fish.
It seems to me that the meta-organism that humans comprise is no different than any other collection of any plant or animal. We seem to simply exhaust resources that are valuable to us. I'm not sure if any collective environmental conscience that we might possess is a product of our benevolence or forward-thinking. Is it possible that we simply use resources until they become too scarce, or until we experience enough negative effects that we are driven us to alternate resources? Recognizing those negative effects might be environmentalism, but I'm not convinced that the sum of our environmental decisions are rational.
