A follow up to my (may I say) CRITICALLY UNDERAPPRECIATED POST here Fatal Distraction
You know, it's a shame, because the author spent an hour on the phone with Lenore Skenazy but didn't read her book where a full two chapters are dedicated to exactly this question. It's particularly shameful as the entire article is one long exploration of the the question above, as seen through the lens of personal experience. But what I always find lacking in these warnings is some explanation, not only of how expectations have shifted so radically for parents, but of why they have shifted.
Fatal Distraction is one of the most compelling and horrifying pieces of journalism ever. I've read it so many times now. My god.
And you don't have any munchkins. Mine has had a few instances of croup so far. Fucking terrifying, but astoundingly mild compared to "autolysis of the organs." I feel miserable and useless when my daughter has a wheeze. "tore out her own hair" is a horrible thing to read.
