Hey folks, it was pretty close, but it looks like opinion was weighed towards Half-Life 2 as being our first game of the month! Good choice, in my opinion. Runner ups were Don't Starve and, one of my favorite games of all time, Deus Ex. The latter is a thinker's game, and definitely something I would like to play as well. But submit again next month! Maybe we'll do one of those then.
HL2 is currently $5 on Steam due to the Steam Sale, so you can get it there! Or through more...dubious means, but I don't recommend those if you can help it, haha.
So! We want everyone to be done with the game by July 31st. If you start now, you've got more than enough time. I'll post a discussion thread every Saturday.
So, by next Saturday, July 4th, I say we all get up to Chapter Five: Black Mesa East. You'll know you're there because the chapter name shows up on screen.
Last note: If I find that everyone who was in the club has finished the game before the end of the month, I'll just start the next voting session for a new game. No sense in not doing that, in my opinion.
I'll have another thread for July's "Multiplayer Fridays" voting section after I go get my hair cut.
Happy playing!
Solid choice. You're starting this thing off right. Watch out for headcrabs and beware of Ravenholm!
Yay, we're doing this! I've wanted to play Half-Life for a long time but never got around to it.
I wish I could play it again for the first time, you are in for a great ride.
I would love to join in on this, but I don't think my computer can handle it. I'll find out soon and hopefully be able to revisit one of the classics.
Thank you! I spent a lot of time on it. It's a subject very personal to me. My main machine is a ThinkPad X60 with Trisquel GNU/Linux installed... I have a feeling the room may get a few degrees hotter attempting to game on it. We'll see!
I love that part, because it shows you that you can interact with more in the world than was typical in games at the time, without feeling like a tutorial. It fits organically in the story, and enhances the feeling that you are in a very authoritarian society. That's something I've always enjoyed about game design with Valve. They allow you to feel like you are figuring things out for yourself, while ensuring you know the core concepts before you move on. A similar thing happens right after you get the crowbar, and have to break thru the boards. They use this style again when they introduce the barnacles, by having a bird fly into them and show how they work before you are in danger from them. This article goes into a little more detail on how that is done: Untold riches: The brilliance of Half-Life's barnacles.
aha, I get the format. Will have to pass this month though this is a wicked start. Wayta set the bar high eightbit ;)
