Now that the SOPA and PIPA fights have died down, and Hollywood prepares their next salvo against internet freedom with ACTA and PCIP, it’s worth pausing to consider how the war on piracy could actually be won.
I have made every argument in that article at one point or another, usually in parallel and usually to someone saying "stealing is stealing." Thank you oh so very much for finding one simple Forbes article that so succinctly summarizes my arguments in handy "STFU>FO" format.
> And here’s something no one has stopped to consider: Maybe making movies is too damn expensive. Or rather, far more expensive than it needs to be.
This is basically the argument I've been making lately. People are always so quick to point out that movie studios need to recoup the money they spend making these big budgets movies, but they never seem to question whether the big budgets are necessary in the first place. Oh, what, so Leonardo DiCaprio thinks he's too good to act in our budget film? Fuck 'em -- there are plenty of capable actors more than willing to take his place. Can't afford that epic CGI scene with more explosions per minute than the engine room of the Space Shuttle Discovery? Chuck it in favor of better writing and directing.
