Never never gawker ever.

"Opioid" covers everything from paragoric to Tylenol plus codeine.

For the report, Express Scripts examined 36 million de-identified pharmacy claims of 6.8 million commercially insured Americans of all ages who filled at least one prescription for an opioid to treat acute or longer-term (nonacute) pain from 2009 through 2013. Prevalence, use and costs were evaluated during the five-year study period, including assessments of trends according to age, gender and geography. The research also looked at users prescribed opioids in combination with other medications.

In other words, a non-peer-reviewed industry survey determined that the US consumes a lot more prescription painkillers than the rest of the world without noting that the majority of the painkillers prescribed in the United States are available in the rest of the world without a prescription.

I09 gives me hives.

There are all sorts of problems with the American medical industry and its ilk but you'll never find a reasonable discussion of them on anything owned by Gawker.
