Yeah, this ain't it. This is remedial college social studies, and it presents history as a longitudinal "what did your parents think" problem. There's no attempt to, say, link Reagan's attitude against the Soviets to even Reagan's role as the mouthpiece of the HUAC - it's "what do you think of Reagan? Well, what did your parents think of LBJ? See? History!"

Extrapolate. I think the idea can be applied to teaching history backwards. Just by following causality back through time. Obama? What caused Obama. Bush? What caused neoconservatism. And on back.

We agree on this. However, you said "people do that all the time." To date, I've seen no evidence. I'd like to believe it because I think the idea has merit. But this is not an example of what I'm talking about.
