Well I am a counterexample to that statement. I grew up as hardwired as can be regarding religion. But now I don't believe in anything supernatural.

I am not as hard and fast on this as the person you are replying to but the tendency seems to be genetic. so soft wired?

I don't really understand. Are you saying that the having strong versus weak opinions on religion tends to be genetic?

I don't really know how religion could be passed genetically, but I am pretty sure that my strong beliefs and interest in religion stems from the environment I was raised in.

>the having strong versus weak opinions on religion tends to be genetic close to this. I think that there are genitic traits that allow one to be a true believer in a thing. I think this is why "patriotism", conservative politics and fundementalist religion seem to be coupled. The ability to take someones word for something seems to be have a genetic component. http://youtu.be/pIAoJsS9Ix8 something along these lines.
