I tend to agree with the author of this article that academia should emphasize the scientific nature of philosophy. Philosophy without rigor is useless. Furthermore, philosophy that doesn't address recent scientific advances is useless. I'm of the opinion that a good philosopher should really understand the Big Bang, quantum theory, and relativity because these things imply so many things about the fundamental nature of our universe.
I disagree with the author's real thesis though. When I hear the term philosophy, I think of logic, ontology, epistemology, etc. I think that the term philosophy has changed enough since its inception that it is not confusing.
