The best part is that the heads of the Fraternity do the usual song and dance of "oh, we don't condone these actions", but racist acts have happened in this same fraternity 3 times as of last year.
You ARE your fraternity members, and if your fraternity members are shit, then that's your fraternity.
A girl I know that used to be in a Sorority told me that one of the older women in the group told her to avoid SAE, and that it might as well stand for "Sexual Assault Expected".
Fuck Frats. These are the people who go on to be our businessmen, politicians, teachers, etc. etc. etc.
It's a culture. Not an incident.
Yeah. This annoys me. I attend the University of Oklahoma. I know these people. Today there are "end our campus racism" protests. Like we can "fix" the SAE thing by having prayer vigils. The specific SAE thing has, in the local short term, been fixed. SAE is no longer a frat here. Hopefully someone or another will be identified and get expelled. I don't particularly want to get a degree from the same institution as someone like that, and Boren surely understands that. It'd be nice if the Greek system wasn't campus-affiliated but that's hopeless. So. But the systemic racism... is it just too daunting to look in the face? Because ... "end our campus racism"? Are you kidding me?! It's not like this wasn't an issue until yesterday when some idiots said whatever it is they said. This post isn't making a whole lot of sense but my point, I think, is that the solution does not seem to ever match the problem when race comes up in America. Not even in the same order of magnitude. I'm beginning to wonder if there is a solution. I wandered around campus for a while today, taking the pulse. Pretty much as usual. But I sure can't understand how the various African-American students I encountered feel about getting up and going to class this morning. I just can't imagine that. It's impressive. EDIT: Anonymously sent to the student paper first, I believe. The video was shot by some pledge's date for the evening, says rumor. The best part is that the heads of the Fraternity do the usual song and dance of "oh, we don't condone these actions", but racist acts have happened in this same fraternity 3 times as of last year.
The video was posted to YouTube by Unheard, a black student organization. It was not clear how the group obtained it.
On the SAE wiki, this incident has already been updated in the "Racial incidents" section. Other hateful bits and bobs: Other fun stuff: Aaaaaaand DingDingDingDingDing! e- this couldve been a comment to the post but i was intrigued that you're studying where all this is going down so I did some research on SAE.Sigma Alpha Epsilon has a long record of racist incidents surrounding its members. In 1982 SAE members at the University of Cincinnati were suspended for a racially demeaning party corresponding with Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.[14] In 2013 SAE members at Washington University in St. Louis were suspended for singing racial slurs to African American Students.[15] In 2014, SAE members at Clemson University were suspended for throwing a racially charged, "Cripmas" party.[16] In 2014, SAE members at the University of Arizona were suspended for attacking Jewish students.[17]
In March 2014, the fraternity announced that it was eliminating the tradition of pledging following several high-profile alcohol, drug, and hazing-related deaths
Of all existing national social fraternities today, Sigma Alpha Epsilon is the only one founded in the Antebellum South.
They need to start calling frats what they are: glorified boy scouts for wannabe adults. Damn, normally I am defensive of people getting mad at others for racism, but "there will never be a nigger in SAE" being the main meat of the chat is pretty much unacceptable.
I had many unfortunate encounters with SAE during my brief college experience. They encompassed everything I hate about people. I'm watching this embarrassing fallout with a bittersweet relish.
The Texas A&M sororities had the same saying. So... sounds like a national level of failure. Great job, guys!A girl I know that used to be in a Sorority told me that one of the older women in the group told her to avoid SAE, and that it might as well stand for "Sexual Assault Expected".
They're the nation's deadliest fraternity, 130 chapters are suspended for hazing, and I'm pretty sure they have the highest number of outstanding sexual assault cases nationally. so yes, national level failure. woooo go greek...
