I'm new too, but as far as I've gathered, tags are the equivalent of subreddits, but it's recommended that you also (or even mostly) follow specific users. That way you'll find new users that post with the tags you're interested, and new tags on the posts by the users you follow.

No, tags aren't like subreddits. They're more like Twitter tags.

Think of Hubski as being one single feed and community that you can "extract" parts from to view privately.

Sure, but it's still a fundamental misunderstanding that will restrict the way you interact with the site. You really should think of it as Twitter hashtags, since that's how they actually behave.
