The US doesn't need to bring manufacturing back. We are still the largest producer int the world. That said, I believe (but am too lazy to dig up a source) that high tech manufacturing makes up a very large percentage of our current manufacturing base. It wouldn't be a bad thing if we brought back some of the more general purpose manufacturing. What are absolutely never coming back though are manufacturing jobs. It's a pipe dream to think that well paid blue collar manufacturing jobs are ever going to return to the US.If the US doesn't bring manufacturing back, it will become a decaying, elderly, powerless nation.
I agree. Even low-wage China is facing automation. Automation is inevitable, as is the conversion to economies not based on labour. I'm more concerned that the US and the West maintain the ability to produce things. It's a pipe dream to think that well paid blue collar manufacturing jobs are ever going to return to the US.
