What worries me is that it won't be a single event we need to avoid, but one after another after another... Forever. It will take a very disciplined civilization to avoid that kind of constant destructive pressure.

I think our biggest problem isn't/wont hinge on warfare but on artificial intelligence.

Once an A.I. reaches superintelligence the human race will either become extinct in a matter of months or we'll benefit and gain immortality.

If we manage to create a superai that can completely replaces us our civilization isn't extinct. We may be but that's not the same thing.

I'll worry about it when there are fewer "magic happens" links in the chain.

You assume such an AI is achievable. This premise is hotly contested, and many computer scientists in the area simply do not see it as plausible.

There is no reason it isn't achievable and many leading computer scientists support the idea. Acting ignorant to the idea is simply moronic. It's like saying we don't have nothing to worry because we'll never invent nuclear weapons. It's only a matter of time.
