2-3 years for an egg to hatch? I would have never guessed that. I wonder how long their lifespan is. Google gave me a general answer of 3-5 years; it would be very strange if 1/2 their gestation was 50% of their lifespan.

What could the evolutionary advantage possibly be? Don't most octopus mothers guard and tend their eggs through to term, neglecting to feed themselves? Or is that just Giant Pacific Octopi?
