I rescind the majority of my comments made on this post. The tone of the article pissed me off and clouded my judgement. The simple fact is it's the media's responsibility to protect the disenfranchised and shame the hateful and the fact that most of America is at sea regarding discussing transgender issues means the media needs to step UP, not step back. I do think that the discussion needs more care than NYMag feels it deserves but the discussion does need to happen.
I've heard everything he's said in different forms all over the internet, but this is a pretty great, succinct compilation. I especially loved the "call them whatever they want to be called" section. My wife had a coworker who stubbornly refused to refer to another coworker by their preferred name. His logic eventually came down to, "but why should I?" and we just said, "Because you're not an asshole"
