As someone that lives in Austin, TX, and plays music, this article is worrisome. But it also raises some very interesting questions:
What makes a music scene?
Is it equal parts the musicians and the venues and their fans, or can a music scene exist and still thrive as venues come and go?
And as this continues to happen around the country, could this be a tipping point for the music world as a whole?
The ironic thought that kept popping into my head when reading this was that they're building a hotel in a music district, because people will want to visit Austin and experience the wonderful music scene, but are destroying the music district that is their main draw in the process.
