Five years ago I would have thought you were being cynical. Now I realize that anything like this is so hyper analyzed that what the prez actually thinks about this issue is irrelevant. What is very relevant is how it will poll, which demographic it inspires and how that relates to his electability. Has this always been the case or was there a magical time when politicians actually had views and opinions that weren't the result of which way the wind was blowing?
No, it's always been the case, except when their backs are up against the wall.
FDR violating the law to start Lend Lease and re-arm the country before WWII, pressing the draft at the end. There are a lot of things like that - I'd probably put LBJ's very very reluctant support for civil rights in there, frankly. Presidents don't get to be president without being good politicians. Having said that, there are lots of not-back-up-against-the-wall examples of positions they take as bedrock. I think perhaps Obama care was one for Barack. -XC
