Startups have been worthless ever since the market really settled on the apple/google/facebook/microsoft/twitter systems. They are the fords of an era, and we shouldn't be expecting to be able to invest in the "next" one while putting money into the world of computer software/tech.
That's an interesting way to look at it. However the Fords of the past made a number of acquisitions as part of their growth. It might be true that the next Apple size company might not be coming out of the same environment, but you still can make a company that Apple wants to acquire. Of course, that is going to be a strategy that pays out founders and VC. Not so much the post-IPO investor.
