It has always amazed me how much of the technology listed in 2001 was slowly getting implemented. It also is very upbringing that we're not even quarter way into what he had predicted.
We're uploading more and more of our lives into digital data everyday, it's inevitable that we'll eventually have replicas of our minds, experiences and memories stored somewhere. Perhaps the step afterwards would be to ditch the physical limitations of our bodies, even though it looks scary right now. Then again, tribesmen are scared that their souls are captured when you take their photographs, so it's only normal that we're scared of the idea of disintegrating the ties between our consciousness and physicality.
