If their presumptions about the long, cigar-like shape are correct, I think the most probable explanation is that it's a piece of ejecta from an extra-solar asteroid or planet that was broken up, either by collision or ripped apart by tidal forces. Gravity prefers spherical symmetry, so this was probably a piece of a larger, spherical mass. Cool af.
