I'm about 60-70 pages in (I got the 'omnibus' edition which includes more than just the first book). So far I like it, it's fast-paced; not very deep either, it reads like a "young-adult" novel (which it may well be, I don't know). That's not necessarily a bad thing - The Pullman series "His Dark Materials" was "young-adult" too, and it was great.

I was loooking at the author's Wikipedia page, and I realised I have read something by him before - he wrote "West of Eden", a speculative story where the dinosaur-extinction asteroid of 65 million years ago never hit Earth, and dinosaur evolution continued so that they eventually became sentient. I read it a long time ago but I remember liking it at the time.
