Amidst all the articles that have followed the fire at Notre Dame (shout-out to Le Monde for their non-stop coverage), the musician in me has been looking for coverage on the organ!
First of all, I had no idea :
- Every Sunday afternoon, the organ can be played by any and all who wish to do so, however the waiting list for such a privilege is almost two to three years long.
The smaller organ suffered quite a bit, but it sounds like the grand orgue just awaits some cleaning and surgery for its (rather severe) smoker's lung:
- Fortunately, the organ was largely spared by the fire that started in the cathedral in the evening of 15 April 2019. However, the dust, soot, and intense heat from the fire will undoubtedly have had an impact upon the instrument.
It's just a piece in the puzzle of what's going to be a massive restoration, but fascinating nonetheless.
