It is kind of interesting to think about how much longer IE6 could have stuck around without something like this happening.

There were a lot of intranet applications that only worked in IE6 in use by organizations who couldn't/didn't want to fix them. By the point this post is talking about most IE6 traffic was people in those organizations browsing at work. I think smart phone penetration would have killed it if Google hadn't, as people watching cat videos at work started doing it on their phones.
