Data is not always beautiful.
This is incredible. I'm a little confused about the landings though. I've always read that New Orleans was one of the most important slave ports in the US. But it looks like most of the ships landing directly in the US went to Baltimore or Savannah (or close to there anyway--I didn't see a single one go directly to NO). Was there an intermediate waypoint or something? Like, did Jamaica and Hispaniola need that many slaves, or did they stop there for provisioning or something?
My knowledge of the slave trade is "it's bad" "it killed a lot of people" "it made Europeans rich" and "haiti is a shithole because they rebelled and were cut off economically forever." I should probably remedy that. The third book of The Expanse is shit anyway.
Quick Wikipedia-ing says that NO was more a hub for slave trading within the US after the ban on the international slave trading. Speaking of, however, it's pretty eyebrow raising how many ships came to the US after 1807. As we said yesterday, a law is only as good as its enforcement.
