Love it, thanks for posting. Around the time frame of this story, I would visit death valley once or twice a year. Would spend a week or so doing off roading, camping, hiking, etc. There are some lonesome parts out there, not for unprepared, and easily underestimated. Saw our share of vehicles abandoned part way through a stupid decision.
That's a hell of a story. I've spent a bit of time in Death Valley, and even stayed at the Furnace Creek Inn. And like the writer, I spent quite a bit of time out near Area 51 and Groom Lake back in the late 1980's and early 1990's with the various loonies trying to look in to Area 51. Was even threatened by "Cammo Dudes" once in an unmarked SUV. That would be a terrible place to be lost and wandering with your family... I can't imagine what they went through...
