sigh You provide an essential service. Do it well. And have big plans for how to spend the money grateful people donate. And some "journalist" gets paid $25 to write an article that questions... well... the wording of ads in economically depressed countries...? Sheesh. I'm so tired of articles claiming that someone doesn't deserve the money they have made. Like there is some moral rule that is broken that if you are doing something good, you can't be doing well, or your good is tainted. It's so... pathetic. And it plays into the hands of the oligarchs perfectly... keep the littles nit-picking at each other so they don't notice you just spent $40 bn on another boat. Cripes.
Apparently the Washington Post didn't shout it loudly enough six years ago.And some "journalist" gets paid $25 to write an article that questions... well... the wording of ads in economically depressed countries...?
I've been giving them money under the assumption that if they say they'll shut down if they don't get it, they'll shut down if they don't get it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Predictions_of_the_end_of_Wikipedia#Sources_of_viewers_and_funds It is... unseemly to triangulate from "we have a third of a billion dollar endowment" to "we're doomed" particularly when there are countless ventures more in need of support. I've been donating to Wikipedia for about ten years now. Never fuckin' again. Fuck 'em.
I've donated to them monthly now for ... what? ... a decade? It's fine by me. Someday they won't have any more money. And the $3 or $5/mo I give them staves off that future a bit, and maybe gives them the freedom to do more than their core mission. Heck, maybe even innovate. Good. I'm glad they have oodles of money in the bank. Good people doing good work never have that luxury, and I'm all-in on a future where that is no longer the expected norm.
